Introduction
Alhamdulillah,
thanks Allah SWT for giving us this opportunity to work as a team members in
order to complete this assignment. We would like to take this opportunity to
thanks Madam Siti Hazlifah Bt Hilaluddin, the Lecturer of Classroom and
Behavior Management ( EDU 3104) for helping us and the guidance to make this
assignment smoothly and clearer.
According
to this task, we need to make a research or observation during SBE to analyze
classroom disciplinary problems and select approaches to handle them.
Alhamdulillah, we manage to do that. We also do analyze classroom management
concerns regarding pupils with special need.
There are few misbehaviors that can be
seen such as loitering around, come late to class, sleep in class, talking back
when someone talk to them and many more.
In every problem that they do, there must be a reason that can explain
on why they behave like that.
Then, in this essay, we also do
discuss on the preparation or a plan of intervention to apply any of the
approaches from the models of discipline management in the classroom. This is
quite important as we as a teacher need to create an effective way of teaching
and learning activities.
As
we are observing the classroom management, we get lots of information that we
can applied when we being a teacher in future. So, some of them are written in
essay form in this assignment.
During our SBE at school, we have
found lots of misbehaviors happen in school. Misbehavior can best be defined as
abnormal action or the action that is out of our norm of society.
In education context, we can simply
say that is referred to any misbehavior that can disturb or stop the teaching
and learning process. Meaning that misbehavior is a such a bad things that can
make the teaching and learning process become less effective.
Feldhusen (Levin & Nolan, 2004)
have mentioned that misbehaviors in classroom are a process of disturbing the
process of the teaching and learning process. This is because these
misbehaviors can disturb the focus of the teacher to teach other pupils. According to Emmer and Friends ( Levin &
Nolan,2004), they stated that misbehavior is a process of disturbing the
teaching process of a teacher and also the learning process of other pupils in
a long-term effect.
There are two types of misbehavior
which are destructive and disruptive. Disruptive is the misbehavior or the
actions that can give a harm to others. For examples are hyperactive, noisy,
naughty and so on. Next is destructive which is the misbehavior or actions that
can give harm to themselves, school and society. For examples are vandalism,
gangs and so on.
As to complete this assignment, we
have conducted a research or observation from first day to the last day of our
PBS. From this observation, we can identify the types of misbehavior that we
have seen during the SBE. From the types of behaviors that we have list down,
there is little misbehavior that we annotate how often they occur.
The first misbehavior that we found is
the pupils will talk back
to the teacher if the teacher speaks or asks to do something. This kind of
misbehavior can disturb the process of teaching and learning activities. For a
teacher, this kind of things can disturb their focus on teaching. The teachers
do not focus more on teaching but they do focus on which students did talk back
during the teaching and learning process. So the teaching and learning process
will not become effective.
In what sense the students have the
authority to talk balk to teachers? One of the reasons of this misbehavior is
the lack of social skills. This is because they seem do not know how to respect
the teacher. Yes, the teacher is not their parents but they should learn on how
to respect others and how to socialize with the teacher. Second reason is the
influence of media mass. Meaning, they try to act as if they are the actor or
the actress of the movie.
Secondly, the misbehavior that we have
seen is the pupils tend to disturb others while the teacher is teaching in
front of the class. Actually, this kind of behavior can disturb the teaching
and learning process among the teachers and the pupils. This is because, the
teacher tends to lose their spirit of teaching when looking at their committed.
One of the main reasons for this
misbehavior is they are bored with the subject or the lesson on that particular
time, so they start disturb the other pupils next to them. For example, when
the pupils find that particular lesson does not arouse their interest, they
will get bored and lose their focus in learning something at that time. So, in
order to fulfill the boring time, they try to play and disturb their friends. No
matter how, they will find a way to do that.
Next, there are few pupils who are so
lazy. When the teacher asks them to do this and that, they tend to make it late
and sometimes do not make it at all. For example, when the teacher asks them to
finish the homework at home and send it to
morrow. There are few pupils who are managed to complete and finish
their homework and there are also few pupils who tend to do it early in the
morning at school.
The main reason of this misbehavior is
the lack of attention from the family. The teacher gives the homework to do the
exercise or the reinforcement exercise at home and the parents should do
something to make sure they already finish their homework. Nowadays, parents
are busier and put their attention more on their career than their children. Yes,
they do care about their children’s need but they do care about the other
activity or things that relate to their children. They just simply put their
responsible to the teacher and this is not good and fair.
Other than that, there is also pupils
who are always running here and there in a class. It such a terrible things
when during teaching and learning process, there are students run in class with
nothing. We cannot imagine if we are in that such situation. The pupils love to
run and tease their friends rather than sit and learn something from the
teacher. So, in order to make the teaching and learning process more effective,
the teacher has to take care of the pupils and put more effort to control the
class.
The main reason that they keep running
in class is that they cannot focus more on learning process. They lose the
focus to the teacher and start running to reduce their bored during that
particular lesson. Another thing is that maybe the teaching method is not good
to arouse the pupils’ attention. As we notice that, the pupils like and much
more happy when we try another things or come out with the new ways or idea in
making the teaching and learning process more effective. So, if the teaching method cannot get their
attention, it can give a big trouble to the teacher. Secondly, there are few of
the pupils which are hyperactive. They tend to play around and not care about
others. Plus, they also cannot pay much attention to the teacher and the
lesson.
Then, there are also pupils who come
late to the class. Although the first period starts on 7.45 am but there are
few pupils come at 8 pm. It can be considered as late and can disturb the focus
of the teacher. First, the teacher will try to cover the lesson for the late
pupils and this will make the teacher lose their focus on the others.
Otherwise, the teacher will just focus on the others and try to make the late
pupils catch the lesson on that day.
One of the main reasons of this
misbehavior is because of the distance to the school. Some of the students live
far away from the school and if the there is a traffic jams, they cannot manage
to come to school early. Plus, some of those pupils come from low- income
families. So, they cannot come at school in that punctual time. They do not
have the transport to shuttle to school. So this kind of little thing can be a
big reason for those who are from the low-income families.
Last but not least, there are also few
pupils tend to sleep in class. When the teaching and learning lesson goes for a
few minutes, they start feel sleepy and try to sleep. This will make the
teacher tries to cover and help the pupils to keep awake but this kind of thing
can give an effect to other pupils. Sometimes, the teacher has to stop teaching
just to awake the sleepy pupils. This some sort of disturb the teaching and
learning process and the teacher will lose their interest in teaching.
One of the reason is the teacher is
not being so assertive. In our own understanding, assertive means that the
teachers have to be firm in everything that we do. If the pupils do the wrong
things, teachers must show that you notice all the wrong things and we have to
show that we are not comfortable with that kind of actions or behaviors. Second
reason is the teacher does not try to arouse the pupils’ interest in teaching
and learning process. It means that there is no variety or the teacher just
uses the same and old methods in their teaching style.
All the misbehaviors that we have
mentioned have their own reasons and that things should be well prepared by the
teachers in order to make and create a healthy and effective environment during
teaching and learning process.
Closure
As a teacher, we need to be a good
communicator and know how to prepare a plan of intervention to manage the
discipline problems among the pupils. Yes, academic also important but the
ability to manage the classroom and behavior of the students is the advantages
to the teacher to be a good teacher.
As we already stated that misbehavior
is an abnormal action that are inappropriate to be done by the pupils. So,
there is a reason for that particular problem. If not, the pupils will not do
anything. We can say that children are a honest person. If they behave like
this, it must be because of something that happens or they do not like those
things. So, if we notice they do behave in appropriate way, we should identify
the problems and try to prepare a plan of intervention to control the
classroom.
Whatever it is, the teacher should
come out with the solution. If not, it will disturb the teaching and learning
process. A teacher will lose their interest in teaching when they do find that
the pupils do something else or they need to make other things instead of
teaching. The pupils also will lose their interest if they do find that the
lesson is not good enough to arouse their interest in learning.
Anyway, as a teacher, if we want to
make sure that we can control the classroom effectively, we should try to apply
any of the approaches from the models of discipline management in the
classroom.
As a conclusion, by completing this
task, we get lots of information and knowledge that we never find before. Next,
this task also helps us in order to improve our understanding on the
implementation of the approach to manage the behaviors.
